The charger fails far more often than the pack, and it costs about a tenth as much to put right. Work down this list before you price a replacement — the cheapest and likeliest causes are first.

Charger light stays green, pack never charges

The charger is reporting "full" because it never sees the pack. Nine times out of ten that is a failed charger or a dirty charge port — not a dead battery. The battery management system (BMS) can also latch off after a deep discharge and refuse the handshake.

Do this

Borrow a known-good charger of the same voltage and connector before pricing anything. If a second charger wakes it, you needed a $60–$130 part, not a $600 pack.

Check this first

No lights on the charger at all

The charger power supply or its fuse has gone, or the outlet is dead. Chargers get dropped, kicked and coiled tightly around their own cable, and the strain relief at the brick is the usual failure point.

Do this

Try a different outlet, then inspect the cable where it enters the brick and the plug for kinks or a loose barrel.

Charges only part way, then stops

One cell group has drifted out of balance or is failing, so the BMS halts the whole pack when that group hits its ceiling. This is genuine pack degradation rather than an accessory fault.

Do this

A shop capacity test tells you what percentage of the original Wh is left. Under about 60% is the usual point where a rebuild or replacement is the better spend.

Full charge drains overnight

Either a failed cell group self-discharging, or a BMS drawing parasitic current because it is not going fully to sleep. Both need the pack opened by someone with proper equipment.

Do this

Note the charge percentage, leave the pack off the bike for 24 hours, and check it again. Losing more than a few percent off the bike points at the pack, not the bike.

Pack is dead flat and will not wake up

A lithium pack left for months self-discharges below the BMS cut-off, and the BMS then refuses to accept charge to protect the cells. It is not always terminal, but the recovery is not a home job.

Do this

Do not leave it — the longer it sits under-voltage, the more likely it becomes unrecoverable. A shop can attempt a supervised low-current recovery charge.

Key lost, or the lock will not turn

Most frame-mounted packs lock to the downtube with a barrel key. Some brands stamp a key code on the lock cylinder and will cut a replacement from it — but plenty do not cut keys at all, and say so in their own documentation.

Check the cylinder for a stamped code before contacting anyone. With a code this is a cheap part; without one it is a locksmith or a new cylinder.

Pack is swollen, hot, dented, or smells sharp

Cells are venting. This is the one failure mode that is genuinely dangerous — once thermal runaway starts it sustains itself, spreads cell to cell, and can reignite hours after it looks out.

Do this

Stop charging now. Move it outdoors onto a hard, non-combustible surface away from the building and call a shop or your local hazardous-waste service. Do not put it in a bin or a car boot.

Range has dropped but it still charges

Normal ageing. Packs typically hold about 80% of their original capacity after 500–1,000 full charge cycles, which for most riders is three to five years.

Do this

Rule out the cheap causes first: cold weather alone costs 20–30% range and comes back, and low tire pressure and high assist levels cost more than people expect.

Repair, rebuild, or replace?

Three different jobs at three very different prices. What decides it is not the symptom on its own — it is how much capacity the cells have left and how old the pack is.

A shop capacity test costs $40–$90 and answers the only question that matters here — how much of the original Wh the pack still holds. It is worth paying for before a $600 decision.

If your brand has no local dealer

Plenty of budget and direct-to-consumer eBikes are sold online with no dealer network at all, so the pack itself has to come from the manufacturer. A local shop is still worth the visit: they can confirm the battery is genuinely at fault, identify the voltage, capacity and connector you need so you order the right pack, and fit and test it when it lands. That hour of labor is cheap next to buying the wrong $500 battery.

Never open a pack yourself

A damaged or defective lithium-ion cell can enter thermal runaway — a self-sustaining reaction that spreads cell to cell and can reignite hours after the fire looks out. Fire crews do put these out with water, but it works by cooling the pack rather than smothering it, and it takes far more than a household extinguisher holds — on the order of a few hundred litres for a typical eBike pack. Shorting a cell during disassembly is one of the few reliable ways to start that reaction on purpose. Opening the case also voids both the battery warranty and, in most policies, your home insurance cover for the damage that follows.

Worth keeping in proportion: the CPSC recorded 227 micromobility battery incidents nationally across the five years from 2019 to 2023, against a US fleet in the millions. The fires concentrate in an identifiable and largely avoidable population — uncertified aftermarket packs, mismatched chargers, physically damaged cells, and packs opened or rebuilt by amateurs. New York City, which has both the densest housing and the largest delivery fleet in the country, saw battery-fire deaths fall from 18 in 2023 to 6 in 2024, a 67% drop the FDNY credits to inspections, enforcement and safety outreach.

  • Stop charging immediately if a pack is swollen, dented, hot to the touch, or smells sharp and chemical.
  • Use the charger that came with the bike. Voltage-mismatched generic chargers are a leading cause of pack failure.
  • Buy replacement packs certified to UL 2271 (battery) or UL 2849 (whole bike) — New York City requires it and other jurisdictions have followed.
  • Charge on a hard surface, away from exits, and not overnight while you are asleep.
  • Never bin a damaged pack or leave it in a closed car — take it to a shop or a hazardous-waste drop-off.

Make the pack last longer

Cycle count is not the only thing that ages a battery — how you store it matters just as much, and it is free to get right.

Store at 40–60%
A pack left full or empty for months ages far faster than one stored half charged.
Keep it cool
Heat is the single biggest accelerator of capacity loss. Never store it in a hot car or shed.
Avoid 0% and 100%
Charging to 80–90% for daily riding measurably extends useful life. Save full charges for long rides.
Charge indoors, warm
Charging a below-freezing pack plates lithium onto the anodes and permanently costs capacity. Let it warm first.

How much does an eBike battery replacement cost?

A new OEM pack typically runs $400–$900, and integrated in-frame systems from Bosch, Shimano or Specialized run $700–$1,200. A specialist rebuild — new cells in your original case — is usually $250–$600. Before you price a pack, rule out the cheap failures: a replacement charger is $60–$130, a charge-port repair $30–$90, and a BMS board $80–$200.

Why is my eBike battery not charging when the charger light stays green?

A green light that never turns red means the charger is not seeing the pack at all, so it reports "full". Heat, storing the pack at 100% or 0% for long periods, and fast repeated deep discharges all shorten that. Storing at around 40–60% charge in a cool place noticeably extends pack life.

Should I buy a UL-certified eBike battery?

Yes, and in some places you have to. Look for UL 2271 on the battery or UL 2849 on the complete bike. New York City requires certified batteries for sale and several other jurisdictions have followed, and some building managers and insurers now ask for it before allowing charging indoors. Uncertified replacement packs from marketplace sellers are the single most common source of eBike battery fires.
