Washington State has adopted the 3-class eBike system. Class 1 and 2 eBikes are permitted on bike paths, rail-trails, and most multi-use recreational paths. Class 3 eBikes are restricted to roads and paved bike facilities. Helmets are required for riders under 17, and helmets are required for all eBike riders on certain trail systems. Seattle and other urban areas have extensive protected bike lane networks ideal for eBike commuting. No registration or license is required for qualifying eBikes.
