Michigan has codified the 3-class eBike system. Class 1 and 2 eBikes are permitted on most bike paths, trails, and roadways where traditional bicycles are allowed. Class 3 eBikes are restricted to roads and designated bike lanes. Helmet use is strongly recommended but not legally mandated for adults; riders under 18 are required to wear helmets. No registration, license, or insurance is required for qualifying eBikes. Michigan's extensive trail networks and Great Lakes shoreline paths are popular eBike destinations.
