eBike Laws in Illinois

Illinois recognizes all three eBike classes with specific rules for each. Class 1 and 2 eBikes are allowed on designated bike paths and trails. Class 3 eBikes are restricted to roads and bike lanes and may not be ridden on trails or unpaved paths. Helmets are required for riders under 16. Chicago has additional local ordinances that may differ from state law, particularly regarding Class 3 eBikes in the city. No state registration or license is required.
