eBike Laws in Tennessee
Tennessee recognizes the three classes under T.C.A. § 55-8-301 et seq., and eBikes need no license, registration or insurance. The state tightened its rules this year: a law signed by Governor Lee in March 2026 and effective July 1, 2026 raised the minimum age to operate a Class 3 from 14 to 16, and expanded the authority of cities to regulate or restrict eBikes on public paths, greenways and in state parks for safety reasons. Helmets are required for every Class 3 operator and passenger regardless of age, and Tennessee's general bicycle helmet law separately covers all riders and passengers under 16 on highways, streets and sidewalks. Expect more local variation on Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga greenways as cities use their new authority.
Classes allowed: Class 1, 2 and 3 recognized; Class 3 riders 16+ as of July 2026
