The MVC began taking appointments on June 26, 2026. New Jersey splits machines into two categories: a low-speed electric bicycle is pedal-assist only with the motor cutting out at 20 mph, while a throttle-capable machine reaching up to 28 mph is a motorized bicycle (moped) — and motorized bicycles must also carry insurance.
